Air Purifier vs. a Higher-MERV Filter: Which One Do You Actually Need?

A higher-MERV filter catches smaller particles using the equipment you already have, but past a certain rating it can restrict airflow enough to hurt performance on a system that wasn't designed for it. A whole-home air purifier adds a separate treatment stage sized to your ductwork, so it doesn't force that tradeoff — but it costs more and needs to be matched to your system.
