Early spring — before the heat
- Change or clean the filter
- Clear leaves, grass, and cottonwood from around the outdoor unit
- Schedule a professional cooling check-up before the first 90°F stretch
- Test the thermostat by running the cooling briefly
Summer — during the heat
- Keep the outdoor unit clear and unblocked
- Change the filter more often during peak use
- Watch for weak airflow, warm air, or new noises — and call early rather than waiting for a failure
Fall — before the cold
- Change the filter
- Schedule a professional heating inspection before the first cold front
- Run the heat briefly to catch problems while it is still mild
- Note any burning smell that persists past the first few minutes
Winter — during the cold
- Keep supply and return vents unblocked
- Change the filter on schedule
- If you have a heat pump, know that steam and a defrost cycle are normal
- Never ignore a gas smell — leave and call your utility from outside
